Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity
Week of November 13
This week we continue our series entitled "Enough." This week’s message corresponds to Chapter 3 of the book by Adam Hamilton.
Welcome (10 min)
- Make sure everyone is welcome and knows each other. Do introductions as needed.
- Use an ice-breaker question (Very easy to answer and non-threatening) Describe a time when felt contented.?
Opening Prayer (2 min) – Say the contentment prayer together: Lord, help me to be grateful for what I have, to remember that I don’t need most of what I want, and that joy is found in simplicity and generosity.
[Singing] (5 min)
- You or someone in your group might lead this
- You could also listen to some worship music from time to time.
Sharing your faith (in groups of 3) (10 min)
How have you experienced God recently in your life? or God has been in your life this past week, did you recognize him, are you watching for God moments?
- The power of this question comes when you ask it every time you meet. If people expect it they will start noticing God in their life more. If you do it in groups of 3 you can keep the time to 10 minutes
Reflecting on the week’s passage Philippians 4:10-15 and Chapter 3 of “Enough”
- Have someone read the passage
- Discuss observations about the text.
- Summarize the Sunday message and Chapter 3 of “Enough” and its connection to this text. Possible questions for discussion (Questions taken from Adam Hamilton’s Leaders Guide)
- If a tornado was headed toward your home and you had ten minutes to grab whatever you could before heading to the basement, what would you take with you?
- Why do you think things only bring us temporary happiness and satisfaction?
- What was Paul’s “secret” to contentment? Describe a time when you discovered, like Paul, that your deepest needs are satisfied in your relationship with God through Christ.
- How is simplifying our lives beneficial to us – personally, nationally, and globally?
- Review and discuss the four keys to cultivating contentment life (pages 59-63 of “Enough”. Which of these ideas do you think would be most helpful or effective to you personally, and why?
Ask the mission mandate question (at least once a month)
- How are we (as individuals or a group) fulfilling our mission mandate?
- This will vary from group to group depending on your mission focus.
- As a reminder our general mission mandate is: “to stand with people Jesus misses most and include them in his life-changing, world-transforming family of faith”.
